Interview at Camping Resort Els Pins

This month we will travel to the Maresme region, specifically to its northern end, where the exemplary facilities of the Camping Resort Els Pins are located, one of the pioneering campsites in the province of Barcelona. The campsite was founded in 1960 by four entrepreneurs from the Pla de l’Estany region who decided to expand towards the coast. Today, this project is still led by Joan Viñas, one of the sons of the four founders, who with effort, work, perseverance and a lot of investment has managed to evolve and be a reference for a new operating model adapting to new markets.

Question: How and when was your campsite opened? Who currently manages it?

Answer: The origin of the current CAMPING ELS PINS dates back to the early 1960s, when a group of businessmen acquired a large plot of land in the “Cap de Tordera” area.

From here, and continuously, various actions were initiated to enhance the value of these lands. This led to the birth of one of the first municipal licenses granted in this area. Specifically, on April 19, 1960, the MALGRAT DE MAR TOWN COUNCIL granted the municipal license for the installation of a tourist campsite with capacity for 100 people.

As a curiosity, it should be noted that the regulations of this campsite established that only “students of the University of Würzburg (Germany) and clients of the Klinger Agency” had the right to use it, which reflects the presence of the first German tourists in Malgrat de Mar in the early 1960s.

Later, on April 25, 1967, and given the growth of the sector, the MALGRAT DE MAR TOWN COUNCIL granted a new municipal license to expand the activity, giving rise to what today forms part of the current CAMPING ELS PINS, with an area of 6,500 m² and capacity for 300 places.

From 2020, following the storm Gloria, a stage of profound transformation is being promoted with the professionalization of management and the modernization, expansion and improvement of all facilities and services, forming the current CAMPING ELS PINS RESORT.

For all this, we are proud to be able to say that this company is one of the pioneers in the development of tourism in this area, as well as having contributed, in a modest but constant way, to the growth of tourism as a key sector of the Catalan economy since its inception.

Currently, the campsite is managed by director Carmen Flores, with the direct involvement of the owners.

Q: What would you highlight as the essence of your campsite? What makes you unique and special?

A: The exceptional location of the campsite allows us to have direct access to the sea and the beach, without physical obstacles (roads, train tracks, paths, etc.), as well as the privilege of enjoying the Tordera Delta.

Q: What type of customer visits you the most?

A: Mainly domestic, French, Dutch and German customers.

Q: What improvement or project makes you most proud?

A: The transformation and modernization of the entire campsite, having managed to make a smooth transition from a campsite from another era to a modern campsite that meets current expectations and demands, without having to close or do without customers.

Q: A special memory or fond moment from the campsite’s history

R: The most touching moment experienced by our campsite has undoubtedly been the awarding of the award to CAMPING ELS PINS as the BEST BEACH CAMPSITE in Spain, awarded by the FEEC in 2025. Likewise, in 2022 we received a special mention at the ACSI Awards, as recognition among the 50 best campsites in Spain. For us, these recognitions have been the reward for the great work and all the efforts made by our team to improve our company every day.

Q: If you had to recommend an experience near the campsite, what would it be?

R: It would be to enjoy our privileged natural environment, with direct access to the beach and the Tordera Delta, a protected area within the Natura 2000 Network, ideal for walking, observing wildlife and disconnecting. In addition, our location allows you to complement your stay with cultural and leisure visits to two emblematic cities such as Barcelona and Girona, as well as discovering the entire Costa Brava and Maresme.

Q: What challenge do you consider to be the most important for the camping sector at the moment?

A: The most important challenge is to continue working with current quality standards and stay attentive to the changing needs of our customers.

Q: If you had to define your campsite in 3 words, what would they be?

A: Nature, quality and well-being.

This conversation has allowed us to learn about the history of one of the pioneering campsites in the province of Barcelona. The profound transformation promoted in recent years and the recognitions obtained are proof that innovation and perseverance continue to be keys to successfully facing the new challenges of the sector.
